The Traffic Division handles all minor
traffic offenses that are issued by the Blount County Sheriff's Office,
and Tennessee Highway Patrol. In addition, our office processes all
citations issued under the Blount County Ordinances. Traffic cases
can be handled through our office without having to appear in court.
However, there are some instances where this would not be an option.
This division was specifically designed to better serve the public with minimal inconvenience, and to assist the judges from having
large dockets.
If you have been charged with a minor moving traffic violation, you
have three options in handling your case: |
- You can pay (under most circumstances)
- Attend a Driver Improvement Course, providing you qualify
- Appear in court to have a Judge hear your case
|
| Quick Reference Violations |
Insurance
- If you have insurance but did not have proof with you at the time,
you may provide proof at the clerk's office. The case will be dismissed
at no charge.
If you did not have insurance coverage, you can get coverage, provide proof of coverage, and your case will be dismissed upon payment of court cost.
|
Registration
and Drivers License - You may bring proof of registration
or drivers license to the clerk's office, and your case will be dismissed
upon payment of the cost. |
Equipment
Violations - If you get the equipment repaired and bring
proof of repairs or drive the vehicle and have an officer determine
if the equipment is operable, your case will be dismissed upon payment
of the cost. |
Only the Judge
has the authority to dismiss a case without cost. The only exception
to this is an insurance violation. |
Driving School/Traffic School
Eligible charges for school unless the charge was the result of an accident:
• SPEEDING
• IMPROPER TURN
• FOLLOWING TOO CLOSE
• FAILURE TO YIELD
• PASSING SCHOOL BUS
• ANY MOVING TRAFFIC VIOLATION (NOTE: this DOES NOT INCLUDE Reckless Driving, Drag Racing, Speeding in Construction Zone (with workers present), Speeding in School Zone or In Excess of 30 miles over posted speed limit. Defendant will have to appear in court on these citations).
• SEATBELT
• CHILD RESTRAINT
• COUNTY ORDINANCES (EXCEPTIONS: REG #5, REG #39, REG #40, REG #41, REG #42,
REG #43, REG #44 and REG #45. Defendant will not be eligible for school on these charges. Defendant must appear in Court).
- NOTE: IF YOU HAVE A CDL (Commercial License) OR IF YOU
HAVE ATTENDED A DRIVER IMPROVEMENT COURSE IN THE PAST FIVE YEARS, DRIVING SCHOOL IS NOT AN OPTION.
If eligible, it is required that the defendant appear
at the clerk's office to sign up for class before the scheduled court date. The defendant will be
given a choice of class dates to choose from. If necessary, the clerk will
reset the case in order to give the defendant time to complete the school and
pay the dismissal cost. The case must be paid by the court date either in
person or by mail. The defendant must also bring/mail their original
certificate of completion. We keep the original and place it in the file.
WE WILL NOT ACCEPT PAYMENT WITHOUT THE ORIGINAL CERTIFICATE. COPIES WILL NOT BE
ACCEPTED.
|
Payment Policy
We do not accept personal checks. Individuals may pay with a cashiers check, money order, cash
or you may pay in person by debit card. |
